Training, Resources and Organisation – The Golden Hour

Two paramedics help an injured construction worker

The speed of initial response and quality of initial treatment are essential to provide a satisfactory outcome following traumatic events. This is known as the Golden Hour.

The following are often a prerequisite to a casualty’s survival:

  • Trained personnel
  • Appropriate medication and support.

What was the Incident?

A recent critical accident (attended by Wright Medics) involved major injuries at a construction site.

Our response proves the benefits of having fully qualified Paramedics providing medical support over less qualified staff.

How did Wright Medics Help?

Our Paramedic Clinician was at the casualty’s side within 4 minutes after being called from the Medical Centre. He performed an immediate rapid trauma survey of the casualty, identifying life-threatening injuries.

He also advised the site management to request the immediate activation of the Air Ambulance and NHS Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

Before their arrival, our Paramedic performed lifesaving interventions,  including:

  • Administering intravenous pain relief and Transexamic Acid (TXA), which aids with major haemorrhage control
  • Manipulating exposed limbs to maintain blood circulation
  • Using a LifePak 12 to carefully observe the casualty’s electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure and peripheral oxygen perfusion.

These interventions would not be available through less qualified personnel.

What was the result?

Our Paramedic’s actions ensured the casualty was transferred to a major trauma centre by the Air Ambulance and HART Team, following a professional debriefing by the Paramedic.

We ensured the casualty departed for definitive care within the critical Golden Hour.
